Sensors May Monitor Aircraft For Defects Continuously

Networks of sensors mounted on commercial aircraft might one day check continuously for the formation of structural defects, possibly reducing or eliminating scheduled aircraft inspections. Like nerve endings in a human body, in situ sensors offer levels of vigilance and sensitivity to problems that periodic checkups cannot, says Dennis Roach, who leads a Sandia National Laboratories team evaluating some of the first sensor systems for aircraft.

New Metal Alloys Boost High-temperature Heat Treatment Of Jet Engine Components

New "fixed points" identified at high temperatures reduce the uncertainty of industrial heat treatments. One consequence is more efficient jet engines.

Laser Sets Records In Power And Energy Efficiency

Researchers have made strides in laser design, material growth and laser fabrication that have greatly increased the output power and wall-plug efficiency of quantum cascade lasers. They have demonstrated individual lasers, 300 of which can easily fit on a penny, emitting at wavelengths of 4.5 microns, capable of producing over 700 milliwatts of continuous output power at room temperature and more than one watt of output power at lower temperatures.

Bird Sized Airplane To Fly Like A Swift

Engineers have just designed the RoboSwift. RoboSwift is a micro airplane fitted with shape shifting wings, inspired by the common swift, one of nature's most efficient flyers. The micro airplane will have unprecedented wing characteristics; the wing geometry as well as the wing surface area can be adjusted continuously. This makes RoboSwift more maneuverable and efficient.

Helicopter Flight Trials Successful For European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service EGNOS

Successful trials have recently been conducted at Lausanne, Switzerland, using the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) to guide a helicopter as it approached and touched down at an emergency medical service landing pad in the city.
